Californian artist Julie Dillon specializes in science fiction art, and frequently depicts visions of technological futures. Her work imagines the future of human aging, astronauts lost to space and bionic limbs among other insights. Above is her piece “Slumbering Naiad,” which illustrates ice cube-esque blocks of nature. Ecosystems appear to be preserved in these cubes – lily pads, fish, seaweed and a humanoid naiad are stored for the time being. To me, this piece stirs up thoughts of cryogenic sleep. Dillon’s frozen storage makes viewers question whether these environments can ever be brought back once dead.
