Colleen Jordan is making plants a fashion statement. Intended for live succulents and various plants, her Wearable Planters affix to bikes and clothing using magnets. The planter itself is made by a 3D printer, which demonstrates a unique interaction between nature and technology. At the time of her interview, Jordan also planned to make a plant-growing bench for the Atlanta Beltline.
This union of natural with man-made is not only eye-catching, but also symbolic. Whether it’s worn as a necklace or as a brooch on a lapel, it marks the wearer. These planters bring nature wherever the wearer goes – into office buildings, cities, factories. They raise discussion about the presence of plants in an increasingly constructed environment. The planter itself is a technologically made object, that has to assert plant presence in an unnatural setup. Instead of independently growing from the earth, plants are accommodated for in an altered location.
