In 2012, Olafur Eliasson’s “Dong Zhuang Sunpath” made a visual investigation into the sun’s travels past earth. Attaching thirty-nine glass spheres to a wall (with the floor symbolizing the horizon), his art installation corresponded with the autumnal equinox in Guangzhou. The curve of the spheres followed the trail of the sun thanks to carefully monitored measurements over a period of twelve hours. The project encompasses an interplay of “place, body, and the universe” that frequently factors into Eliasson’s work.
The interactive part of this installation comes in with the mirrored spheres. Viewers can monitor their own reflections and bodily forms in relation to the sun’s passage. I really enjoy how Eliasson grounds the outer workings of space into a tangible installation within reach.
