“Etheric Ocean” is an experimental way of processing poetry, incorporating both images and sounds into the reading process. As an electronic webpage, the poem spans across a horizontal browser window for readers to gradually scroll through. Developed by JR Carpenter, the project is referred to as “an underwater web art audio writing noise site” by its creator. It combines animal and mechanical sounds, photos of jellyfish and television static in a frenzied eco-digital union.
The final product is engaging, creating thorough sensory surroundings for participants. The overall effect does rely on several technological requirements, mainly the ownership of Apple’s Quicktime to make the sounds possible. But Carpenter offers a free download link on the site’s start screen, resulting in an easily accessible experience for anyone with a computer and internet access.
